International Yoga Day – Yoga is Universal
Sunday June 21, 2015, 2-4pm
At Sunset Yoga Center
“Yoga embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and with nature.” Prime Minister Narenda Modi of India
June 21st, 2015 will be the first International Yoga Day as designated by the United Nations.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said: “yoga can bring communities together in an inclusive manner that generates respect. The diverse benefits it brings, including helping people deal with stress in emergency situations.”
Let us come together that day and celebrate yoga by sharing and practicing together. Our celebration will take place on the day of the summer solstice.
Sunset Yoga Center will host this event for us from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
at 12923 NW Cornell #203, Portland, Oregon 97229.
Message from Geeta Iyengar: “We are all yoga sādhakās and sādhanā is our very breath, our prāna . The United Nations has declared 21 st June as the International Yoga Day, which will be celebrated all over the world. For us everyday is yoga day. However to respect this special day [the concept of which was suggested by Guruji] in a talk in Bangalore sometime in 2011-2012, to respect Guruji, we have thought of a special practice programme for this day. Many students from across the world approached me if they could have a special sequence of practice for this day… the (summer) solstice.” Geeta has prepared a special practice program for us to use that day. This practice will be led by Amy Duncan, a Certified Iyengar Yoga Instructor.
There will be refreshments and a video of Guruji (Mr. Iyengar) practicing/teaching. Join us for this free community event to deepen your practice and join your community. Open to all levels and all ages.
Amy has studied Iyengar Yoga since 1993. She began teaching yoga in 2002. She has trained and apprenticed with Portland-area and nationally recognized Certified Iyengar Yoga Instructors. Her focus is on the correct alignment in each pose, bringing understanding, perception and humor to each of her classes. Amy became a Certified Iyengar Yoga Instructor in the fall of 2012.
