Ahimsa – non-violence. This week in the Portland area we could interpret this yama in light of safety. As the possibility of inclement weather continues in our area, please be safe! Sunset Yoga Center will update the online schedule in real time to indicate when classes are canceled.
To see if the class you are interested in is canceled, go to the Schedule page and look for the specific class on the day you are thinking of attending. If the class is canceled, there will be a line through it and it will say “canceled” next to it.
We strongly recommend that you use your best judgment when deciding to attend class or not. The Portland area has many different micro-climates and conditions can be radically different from one area to another. Even if class is still being held, if you do not feel safe making your way to the studio, please stay home.
If class is canceled or you do not feel safe coming to the studio, use it as an opportunity to work on your home practice. You were setting aside that time for your yoga practice anyway, right? Need help with developing a home practice? Here’s one of many ways to figure out what to practice:
Think of the last class you attended. Write down all the poses you can remember, even if you do not remember the Sanskrit names for them. Think about the order in which you did the poses in class and do your best to recreate the sequence. Then notice how your home practice might be different from how you practiced in class. This is one way to practice the niyama concept of svadhyaya, or self-study.
More ideas for developing a home practice are available to members of IYNAUS, the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States.
